Understanding Earth Overshoot Day: Why Resource Efficiency Matters
30/06/2026
Every year, the Global Footprint Network calculates "Earth Overshoot Day".
This is the date when humanity’s demand for resources exceeds what Earth can regenerate in the remainder of that entire year.
The Dark Reality
When we look back to the early 1970s, the trend is stark, humanity’s resource consumption was roughly in balance with what our planet could provide for the full year.
Since then, that date has shifted rapidly, and for many years now, we have been hitting the six-month mark. This means we are effectively consuming the resources of nearly two planets every single year.
While it is encouraging to see the curve beginning to level out, if we don’t actively reverse this trend, we risk environmental degradation that will threaten life on a massive scale.
The Pivot to a Circular Economy
Data like this is one of the drivers behind all of the recent legislative shifts in England. We are moving away from the old process of "taking resources, making products and disposing of them when finished" and toward a circular economy.
A circular economy is simple concept: we must be smarter with our resources to reduce waste, keep materials in use, and regenerate natural systems.
Partnering for Change
At 1st Waste, we help businesses transition towards sustainable operations by consolidating waste streams, providing reporting tools, and optimising infrastructure and schedules, all while ensuring compliance.
